MOAA recently raised the amount awarded to an interest free loan of $5,500 for general scholarship awardees. The Designated Scholar Program (which this Chapter supports through an endowed scholarship) was also increased to a grant of $500 and an interest free loan of $5,000.

2007 the best year ever with over $7.9 MILLION in educational assistance provided to over 1,600 military dependents!
******************
The MOAA scholarship program is open to the children of active and retired members of our uniformed armed services---regular, reserve and National Guard. The most deserving of these students, based on grades, financial need, and participation in school and/or civic activities, are approved for the Designated Scholar Program.
The Designated Scholar Program provides selectees with a yearly $500 grant and a $5,000 interest-free loan for up to 5 years of undergraduate education, contingent on the student maintaining academic excellence.
The MOAA Scholarship Fund established the St Petersburg Area Chapter Designated Scholarship in March 2007. This was in recognition of the past generosity of our members and our commitment to raise $25,000 by 31 Dec. 2008. We are well on our way to achieving this goal. Consequently, this past Fall our Chapter sponsored its first Designated Scholar, and will continue to do so each year in perpetuity. We can say “perpetuity” with a great deal of certainty since MOAA administers this program without deducting any operating expenses, their default rate with over 9,000 former students has been less than 1 percent, and the interest from our invested contributions will pay the annual $500 grant.
Thanks to your support, the Chapter raised its $25,000 well ahead of the 31 December 2008 date. Our first designated scholarship program is fully funded.
Because of this success, we have started another (a second) designated scholarship with MOAA. Our goal is to complete this scholarship well ahead of schedule, just as we did with the first program. And, with your continued help, we can do just that!
Our Designated Scholarship is a wonderful way to help deserving students. We thank all who have contributed for helping generations of military children achieve a college education.
