The original letter conferring tax exempt status from the Department of the Treasury, dated May 27, 1976 is kept by the President with a copy held by the Secretary.

3. The Chapter became a TROA affiliate on October 18, 1960. The Charter certificate lists the names of all charter members.

4. The Chapter changed is name to the St. Petersburg Chapter, Military Officers Association of America on October 11, 2002.

5. The Chapter changed its name to the St. Petersburg Area Chapter, Military Officers Association of America on April 5, 2006.

The St Petersburg Area Chapter is comprised of over 200 members from all branches of the uniformed services, including the Guard and Reserve, active duty and retired. That total includes over 70 Auxillary members.

There is a Retired Officers Wives Club associated with the Chapter, and the President of that Club sits on the St. Petersburg Area Chapter Executive Committee.

The Chapter highly encourages Life Memberships for MOAA, although the Chapter itself does not have a Life Membership program due to the transient nature of our membership.

The Chapter draws members from the Greater St. Petersburg area and supports MOAA National as well as the Florida Council of Chapters.

The St. Petersburg Area Chapter supports a Chapter program called Help Our Troops (HOT) whereby volunteers led by Mrs. Anita Harrow, Auxiliary Member--Navy, collect, package, and mail boxes of supplies and desired items to troops involved in fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.  As of December, 2015, over 1,000 boxes of "supplies" have been handled by Mrs. Harrow and sent to our troops.

In 2014, the Executive Committee voted to assist the Heaven on Earth for Veterans organization, a charitable organization founded and run by chapter members to provide low cost housing to veterans. The chapter provides funding and resources as needed.

The St. Petersburg Area Chapter supports an endowed designated scholar program at MOAA.  2007 was the first year that monies were awarded by MOAA, in the name of the St. Petersburg Area Chapter, to a deserving student from Florida.  Our obligation to the first Designated Scholarship was completed 6 months ahead of schedule, and, as a result of the generosity of our members, the Chapter started a second Designated Scholarship program through MOAA. That Designated Scholarship was also completed ahead of schedule, and the chapter started a third Designated Scholarship in January 2014.

The St. Petersburg Area Chapter provides a service to our members whereby we notify them of the impending expiration of their ID cards, if members have provided that date to us.  This service provides an incentive to our members to "renew early," and is handled by our Data Base Manager.

The St. Petersburg Area Chapter operates an electronic communications network, the Military Message Center (MMC), for club members and local veterans/veteran organizations.  The network carries news about legislative affairs and other issues of interest to retired military persons, active duty military personnel, veterans, and families.  Any interested person with an e-mail address can subscribe/unsubscribe to this network by sending an email message to Lt Col Larry Fernald, USAF (Ret), at

Minutes of luncheon and Executive Council meetings, along with monthly financial reports, are published in Officers Call, which is distributed on a monthly basis.

Additionally, in an effort to save valuable funds for the Chapter, we email the monthly edition of Officers Call to those members who elect to receive it in an Adobe Reader format.  To sign up for the Officers Call electronic edition (OCe), please email either the data base manager or the webmanager with your intentions and we will do the rest.
